Sata Hard drive controller will it work on an Ide hdd ?

Simple question but having trouble to find the answer

    I have a 160gb WD HDD IDE(wd 16000jb) whose controller has failed.

I can get a drive controller from a WD 160gb (wd1600JS)drive but its SATA
The two drives are identical except that the manufacturers number differs.

The connections are same – so would putting this controller on the ide drive work or does a SATA drive have different internal working
g to an IDE drive I know that to replace the controller it has to be same make model and pref year but nowhere can i find anyone who has done this -even out of curiosity .
    Regards Pete

    i suspect it will work.
even though i have never tried that i have taken apart several hard drives, both sata and ide and i agree that they are identical as far as i can tell. also, from experience, i have seen controllers from manufacturers that have converter chips rather than true sata chips.
this gives me a clue that the hardware was the same and instead of upgrading to a true sata ship, they used the same hardware and modified the electronics a little until they got rid of their stock.
