Thinkpad Port Replicator

Thinkpad Port Replicator

The anodized aluminum that HP draped all over the exterior is absolutely gorgeous

What started as a regular old e-mail conversation between our Labs Analyst for audio equipment Michael Kobrin and Ziff Davis Editor in Chief Jim Louderback turned into a debate on the marketing technique for the video-capable iPod, the necessities of longer Compaq Presario C700 Battery life, and the yearning for bigger (or smaller) screens.

After the release of the Lenovo ThinkPad X200, we all knew that the coming of a look-alike convertible tablet would be imminent. The company’s predecessor pair—the ThinkPad X61 and the X61 Tablet—shared many commonalities (with the exception of the swivel screen) such as the patented keyboard, the 12-inch screen, and similar innards.

Some folks think that just because our Web site is called PCMag.com, we only cover PCs and HP G7000 Battery aren’t into Apple products. I’ve got news for you: The PC in our name stands for “personal computer”—which include those made by Apple. In fact a lot of the products Steve Jobs has bestowed on us have received very positive reviews. And right now our PC Labs are just bursting with all sorts of brand new Apple toys.

The latest Apple iBook (12-inch) may look the same on the outside, but some significant changes inside make it all the more impressive. Upgrades like a processor bump, added  hard drive space, and more memory, along with several features passed down from the PowerBook—like a scroll touchpad and hard drive protection—greatly boost the Apple iBook’s value, especially considering that the price remains the same low $999.

The P305 could easily be used as a secondary system, something that you can leave on your desk most of the time, plugged 436281-141 into a port replicator or a second monitor.

Although it’s nowhere near as light as the 6.7-pound Apple MacBook Pro 17-inch, the 7.5-pound P305 is significantly  lighter than the Gateway P-171XL FX (9.2 pounds), the Dell Inspiron 1720 (8.8 pounds), and the HP Pavilion dv9500t (8.2 pounds). If this is still too heavy, you can work your way down to the Toshiba Satellite A305-S6845, which has a 15.4-inch screen and weighs only 5.8 pounds.

The Mini-Note is designed to look like a $2,000 machine. The anodized aluminum that HP draped all over the exterior is  absolutely gorgeous. It makes this tiny laptoplook like a darker, miniature Apple MacBook Pro.
