In addition to Windows built-in power management functions, there are many tools for the procedure which can be used to monitor the battery status. For example, PowerCenter, a power supply monitoring tool, which can be downloaded free of charge ( TimothyBug / powercenter / index.htm). Only 800KB, is a software designed just for the laptop. PowerCenter not only shows the percentage of battery capacity, but also shows the actual hours and minutes of time available.
PowerCenter has three kinds of display ways.
(1) FullDisplay: display detailed information in the opened windows, including the use of battery or AC power, the percentage of remaining battery and availability of time.
(2) CompactDisplay: always display at the top of the window.
(3) MinimizeDisplay: minimum the PowerCenter to Windows’ task bar, indicating a relatively simple information.
PowerCenter is also attached to a control center, making up to as many as six kinds of warning. When the battery capacity reduces to a certain extent, it can send warning to the user in time and save the documents being processed. In order not to waste electricity and CPU resources, PowerCenter automatically detects the battery state’s changes.

Additionally,if your laptop has Infrared port,disabled it when you don’t need it.it can also save energy.

Is there any temporary fix for a broken power jack on a laptop?
Depends if the power receptor is just disconnected or if it’s completely nackered.
You can solder it or tape it with electrical tape if its disconnected. But if not you’ll have to buy and fit a new one.
